The Associate Degree in Business Administration has been designed to develop and equip
individuals with the required skills and knowledge for a range of specialist and generalist
business professions. It provides social and personal development; strategies and principles
around understanding organizational management, marketing and finance; and the ability to
apply these concepts in a variety of workplace environments. The Associate Degree is closely
aligned to the structure and content of the foundation component of the Bachelor’s Degree.
Based on labour market projections from the UK, USA, Jamaica and Canada (see above)
professionals with training in business are projected to be in demanded at the supervisory and
management level beyond the year 2020. This Associate Degree in Business Administration is
designed to give students skills in mathematics writing and communication plus core knowledge in management, accounting, marketing, law and finance, in addition to access to courses in the fields of commerce, and information communication technology to gain employment at the entry and supervisory levels of various industries.
The Associate degree in Business Administration is an excellent training option for anyone
who has an aptitude for the world of business and commerce. The programme is aimed at
addressing the needs of a wide cross section of individuals, whether there is a long-term
objective to pursue a career in the field of management with a business organization, or to
become an entrepreneur. In both situations, a basic knowledge of the world of business will keep you in good stead. The Associate degree in Business Administration provides graduates with the fundamental tools that are needed for entry-level jobs and for venturing into the
entrepreneurial arena.
Matriculation/Articulation Requirements Associate Level
Basic Matriculation Requirements
There are two (2) methods by which an applicant can meet the Basic Matriculation Requirements; these are classified as Standard forms of matriculation and Alternate forms of matriculation.
1. Standard forms of matriculation
An applicant MUST have a minimum of five (5) passes in subjects at CSEC or
GCE O’Level including English ‘A’ (CSEC) or English Language (GCE O’Level)
2. Alternate forms of matriculation
a. Equivalent qualification(s) as determined by the CCCJ
b. Mature Status as determined by the CCCJ

Matriculation Requirements
Entry to Year 1
For entry into Year 1 of this Associate Degree Programme, candidates must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
a) Normal Matriculation
i) Four (4) CXC/CSEC subjects at the General Proficiency Grades I, II and III (effective June 1998) or their equivalent. This should normally include English A and Mathematics. A candidate with three CXC/CSEC subjects at General Proficiency Grades I, II, and III as above and two subjects at Grade III obtained prior to June 1998 will be deemed to have satisfied the minimum entry requirements. English A must be obtained at General Proficiency Grade I, II, or III (effective 1998).
ii) Candidates seeking entry to the Early Childhood Associate Degree Programme may use the NCTVET level II qualifications in Early Childhood as one of the four subjects required for matriculation.
iii) For the purpose of equivalence, CXC Basic I, GCE ‘O’ Level at Grade A–C; SSC National Assessment Levels 4 and 5; City and Guilds and ULCI General 2; Passes in first-year level Technical courses and RSA Stage 2.
b) Mature Entry
Candidates over the age of 30 years seeking admission into the programme and who do not have the academic qualifications set out in (a) above but who have completed at least five years of teaching in one or more recognized early childhood institutions may be able to seek entry under the mature entry clause but must establish clear evidence of their competence in the field. Colleges desiring to admit students under this clause should have applicants undergo the following processes:
i) Submission of a portfolio which documents competence/accomplishments in the following ways:
• A portfolio with representative sampling of work (where applicable) over a period of three years immediately preceding application.
• Written 500 word account of life history and a vision of his/her role in education.
• Documentation to substantiate certificates/awards obtained in the informal setting, e.g. on-the-job courses.
• Recommendations from professional educator(s) and person(s) who have supervised him/her on his/her area of competence.
ii) Certification to demonstrate that the candidate has obtained at least 2 subjects through a formal examination system.
iii) Undergo an entrance examination to assess candidates learning potential which should include basic proficiency in Numeracy and English Language.

The Associate Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management offers a variety of options for the student interested in gaining employment in the hospitality industry at an entry level or as a management trainee. The course is offered over a two [2] year period, but students have a maximum of five [5] years within which to complete their studies. Students cover this programme through classroom as well as internship exercises, done in appropriate sectors of the economy. All students pursuing the course are required to complete all specified credits in the programme, unless otherwise exempted [see Prior Learning Document]. Additionally, all students are required to complete two hundred and forty [240] hours of work experience (minimum). Students must also be Team Jamaica Certified and must complete the training for certification in First Aid.
This Associate Degree program prepares graduates to compete for various entry-level management careers in the food and beverage management, accommodations and travel and tourism and entertainment industries, depending upon which emphasis is selected. Graduates seek employment in positions with job titles such as hotel/restaurant management trainee, front desk supervisor, food service supervisor, food production assistant, dietary manager, and shift supervisor, assistant manager in hotel/motel/restaurant/institutional operations.

Travel and Tourism Management
Travel and tourism in Jamaica and by extension the Caribbean is poised as being one the major contributors to economic development within the next couple of years. Jamaica’s beautiful spots, scenic mountains, beautiful parks, cultural activities, and river rapids attract thousands of people annually. These attractions result in numerous jobs related to travel, transportation, food services, lodging, and entertainment. One purpose of the Travel and Tourism option is to provide students with an overview of types of jobs in the fields. A second purpose is to acquaint students with key concepts and skills related to the travel businesses.
Food and Beverage Management
The Food and Beverage Management program is designed to meet the increasing career opportunities within the hospitality industry. Students will receive proper management skills through an academic classroom experience in addition to hands-on culinary training in a well-equipped, modern kitchen. Graduates will be well-versed in a wide range of management skills, enabling unlimited opportunity.
Accommodation Studies Management
This specialization examines the management of various activities involved in housekeeping, especially in hotels and guest houses accommodation. It produces a thorough overview from the big picture of maintaining quality staff, planning and organizing to the technical details of plant maintenance and hotel planning and design.
Entertainment and Events Management
Successful entertainment and event activities are critical to guest retention and publicity. This programme focuses on the details required when planning events in the entertainment environment; especially in the tourism market. The emphasis is on the planning of entertainment events in a systematic manner that will ensure their success.

The minimum admissions requirement for the Bachelors of Education is that all candidates must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
i. Five CXC/CSEC subjects including English A and Mathematics at the general Proficiency Grades I, II and III (effective June 1998) or their equivalent.
ii. Students reading Primary Education should normally possess the requirements stated in (i) which should include a physical science subject and either a Social Science subject or an Arts subject
iii. In addition to the requirements set out at (i) and (ii), students reading Primary specializations must have the following:
a. Literacy Studies – Primary – CXC/CSEC English B General Proficiency Grades I,II,III A or GCE ‘O’ Level English Literature Grades A equivalent
b. Candidates for Mature Entry

There are 71 credits in the upper division of the Bachelor’s degree programme. The programme is a dynamic one, where students will be exposed to industry practices and experiences during the delivery of the course units. The dynamism of the programme is enhanced given the methods of assessment applied in the teaching/learning process. Learners will, to a large extent, be conducting research based activities, undertaking application assignments and completing a period of internship in industry. The programme is the final two-years of a four (4) year undergraduate course of study with a total of 71 credits. After successfully completing the final two years of the programme, the learner will be awarded the Bachelor Degree (see structure for Bachelor Degree programme).
In order to meet the challenges of the 21st century there is the need to have a programme that is on the cutting edge of business education and training. Learners will be able to work both locally and internationally as well as move on to the Masters level if they so desire. The focus is to offer multiple paths enabling graduates to successfully obtain core competencies in business concepts. Hence the structure is tailored for the students’ desired career objectives as well as national and industry needs. This focus is supported by a curriculum based on national and international standards; use of contemporary business education methodologies, techniques, and tools across courses; partnership with local industry; and student-focused delivery modalities and assessment activities. This diversity produces well trained, well rounded business professionals who should have both theoretical and practical understanding of the roles of business organizations in the modern society.

The course blends a conceptual theoretical framework with practical applications and covers basic discipline material through to more specialized accounting requirements.

The marketing major enables students to understand the activities that are essential to promoting products and services, as well as developing and distributing them to the ultimate consumers. Marketing courses stress problem solving and decision making, as well as the development and implementation of marketing policies and strategies. Students completing the program find exciting, action-oriented careers in fields such as personal selling, retailing, advertising, product development, manufacturing, social media, distribution and market research.
Human Resource Management
The HR management major is designed for students interested in developing an understanding of the nature and capabilities of human resources. The study and understanding of management principles and practices will aid those who intend to enter the field professionally as administrators, executives, operations managers, human resource managers, management consultants, or in other management positions. Students graduating with a HR management major are employed by a variety of organizations in industries such as manufacturing, public utilities, and transportation, merchandising and banking, as well as government and non-profit entities. A sound background in accepted management principles can accelerate progress to positions of greater responsibility.

a. A current student who has ended the final semester of a CCCJ Associate degree programme and trailing no more than six (6) credits.
The following conditions shall apply.
i. The qualifying degree must be in an area relevant to the intended programme of study.
ii. The outstanding credits cannot be from a first year course.
iii. The outstanding credits cannot be from a course leading to a specialization/major.
